Positive Behaviour for Learning

What is PBL?

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole school program that actively promotes positive behaviour. It enables students to develop a clear understanding of required expectations, become responsible for their own behaviour and work together to create a positive, productive and harmonious learning community. Our school-wide expectations are represented with a Seagull Mascot named Chips. Our School values target Quality, Respect and Responsibility.

PBL is a data driven program. Therefore, the behavioural data that we collect, affects what we do throughout the school in PBL. A PBL committee meets on a fortnightly basis to organise the implementation of PBL and review data. Each week, the school will have an area of focus that involves explicit teaching of PBL lessons focusing on supportive positive behaviours and strategies. Teachers and students will participate in lessons that involve discussion, role-play and reflection. Expectations are reinforced to students through the use of custom posters, in all identified areas of the school, to better target our core values throughout the school Kindergarten to Year 6.

How is positive behaviour rewarded?

In the classroom, teachers hand out High Flyer Tokens when they observe students displaying targeted positive behaviours. Students place High Flyer Tokens in the High Flyer Token box and are calculated based on the number of tokens per student. This is then recorded on a visible PBL chart in each classroom, fortnightly. Students aim to reach milestones in order to receive levelled High Flyer wrist bands and school pin and wings.. For inappropriate behaviour, all teachers use a time-out and level system.

What is the award system for positive behaviour? and When are they handed out?

Once a student has attained the required merits to be traded for the next higher award, they hand them back to their teacher to be stamped and returned and are presented with the next award at the next school assembly. Note, for the Blue and Gold Principals award, the student needs to also have a Citizenship Award to be able claim the Principal's Award. The school staff keep a keen eye out for students who have shown to be true citizens and presented the Citizenship Award. Exceptional behaviours are required to receive this award.

Shortly after this, a PBL High Flyer Fun day is organised to celebrate the achievement of all High Flyers for that period.
